What Causes Enlarged Prostate

Enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. This is a very common health condition that affects men in their middle ages and older years. In fact over fifty percent of men experience symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia every year. More than one condition causes enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate is not in and of itself a death sentence, so don’t get too worked up if you are dealing with this.

Many times the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia is as simple as monitoring the situation. If you are to be monitoring this condition then it is important that you do so carefully because an enlarged prostate can lead to more serious conditions such as kidney damage, prostatitis, and bladder stones.

You may be wondering what exactly happens when you have an enlarged prostate. The prostate gland is supposed to be about the same size as a small walnut. It sits directly between the urethra and pubic bone. When the prostate begins to enlarge the bladder has to work extra hard to make the urine fit through a urethra that is too small. The muscles become overworked which is why there is frequent urge to urinate when you have benign prostatic hyperplasia. The prostate continue to enlarge and then the bladder continues to have problems and the problems can worsen.

The medical community has not come to a conclusion of what exactly causes enlarged prostate, though there are many theories out there. Many believe that the androgens are the culprit of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Part of the reason that they believe this is that men who had been castrated when they were young children do not have any prostate issues when they are adults.

You may be wondering how the doctor diagnoses benign prostatic hyperplasia. There are actually three different ways that the doctor can come to a conslusion of benign prostatic hyperplasia. One is by giving a rectal exam. Another is through blood tests. The third is by giving an ultrasound. The doctor will always want an ultrasound of the prostate, testicles, and kidneys in order to check for cancer.
